Techno-mathematical Literacies (TmL) in the Workplace, consists

of two phases. The first is concerned with the question of which mathematical and statistical

practices are present in different industrial sectors (Packaging, Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing,

Automotive Manufacturing and Financial Services). This phase involved case studies in several

companies per sector of up to 12 person-days per company. Based on work-shadow observations

and interviews, we aimed to understand the work process and to describe what was technomathematical

or statistical about the practice that we observed. One of the results is a set of real

contexts and situations in which we think employees’ TmL can be improved.

The current, second phase of the research is concerned with the question of how we can

support employees in developing the TmL that are useful in their work. We carry out design

experiments (Cobb, Confrey, diSessa, Lehrer, and Schauble, 2003), which are characterised by

design cycles of preparing, designing, testing and revision. Because we are not industry experts in

any of the sectors under investigation, we do not seek to deliver complete training courses, but

rather to design learning opportunities that may be co-developed with company trainers as

elements of workplace-based training programmes. In this paper, we describe the process of

designing and testing two such learning opportunities in the packaging industry, which we tried

with two separate groups of managers (5 and 13 individuals) from different packaging companies,

using their responses as a window on their thinking about mean and limits, as well as target and

specifications, scale and trend. In this paper, given the early prototype stage of the learning

opportunities used, we offer the managers’ responses as impressions of issues for further research

rather than as providing definitive conclusions about workplace understanding of statistics

The next step usually sends a letter of demand by a qualified lawyer. The copyright act does not state whether or not names, titles or slogans are protected by copyright.

• Letters (including emails), manuscripts, and other unpublished writings
• Photographs, paintings, drawings, and other graphic arts
• Music (including scores and recordings)
• Films, videos, etc.

However, not every copyrighted work will need permission. For example:

• Your own unpublished work may of course be placed on your course page, since you own the copyright
• Your own published work may be included if (and only if) you retained the copyright. (If you assigned copyright to your publisher, it may be necessary to pay to use your own work.)
• Works in the public domain, either by express assignment or through lapse of copyright, may be freely used. (See the chart WHEN WORKS PASS INTO THE PUBLIC DOMAIN by Lolly Gasaway for a nice summary of this complex determination.)
• U.S. official government publications can be used without permission.
• Any item for which Vanderbilt has licensed access can be used, subject to the terms of the license. This means that articles in the Library’s electronic journals and electronic books collections may be linked to your online course page, so long as access restrictions are not compromised. (The same items would require permissions if they were scanned locally instead of linked.)

Altering copyright material like making an adaptation or reproducing an important part may need consent.

Uploading copyright material to a server is also reproduction and need a clearance.

You do not need clearance if copyright has expired. It also depends on the law in Australia or other countries. Some countries may be still protected.

There is no specific proportions or percentage, the quality of the part used is more important than its quantity. The use of a part of a work is likely to require copyright permission if it is important. The use of a small part may require copyright permission particularly where the part has resulted from a high degree of skilled labor.

Note: If it’s a multimedia format like a video with music, they maybe one or more copyright to consider.

At its most basic level, compression is performed when an input video stream is analyzed and information that is indiscernible to the viewer is discarded. Each event is then assigned a code – commonly occurring events are assigned few bits and rare events will have codes more bits. These steps are commonly called signal analysis, quantization and variable length encoding respectively. There are four methods for compression, discrete cosine transform (DCT), vector quantization (VQ), fractal compression, and discrete wavelet transform (DWT).

 

Discrete cosine transform is a lossy compression algorithm that samples an image at regular intervals, analyzes the frequency components present in the sample, and discards those frequencies which do not affect the image as the human eye perceives it. DCT is the basis of standards such as JPEG, MPEG, H.261, and H.263. We covered the definition of both DCT and wavelets in our tutorial on Wavelets Theory.

 

 

Vector quantization is a lossy compression that looks at an array of data, instead of individual values. It can then generalize what it sees, compressing redundant data, while at the same time retaining the desired object or data stream’s original intent.

Fractal compression is a form of VQ and is also a lossy compression. Compression is performed by locating self-similar sections of an image, then using a fractal algorithm to generate the sections.

Like DCT, discrete wavelet transform mathematically transforms an image into frequency components. The process is performed on the entire image, which differs from the other methods (DCT), that work on smaller pieces of the desired data. The result is a hierarchical representation of an image, where each layer represents a frequency band.

The plugin is made for easily embedding videos into a blog post. The videos can be integrated from external portals (like YouTube, Google Video and many many others) or they can be uploaded to the web server or a remote server and integrated as well. Additionally a corresponding link to the video on the particular video portal page or a download link to the local file can be generated automatically, if demanded. The linktext is also configurable individually. Furthermore a fixed prefix for the linktext can be determined. The videos can be integrated easily by using the built-in WYSIWYG editor. The plugin generates XHTML-valid code and works from WP 2.5.

A standard is an agreed-upon way of doing something or measuring something. For example, a quality assurance team should work from an established standard of quality appropriate to their work and projects. Such a quality standard might specify that there must be no broken or bad links, or that individual page weights must fall between 10k and 50k.

Some standards are widely followed, such as industry-wide standards. The ISO (International Standards Organization) provides a wide range of standards that ensure — when companies meet and pass the various accreditations and enforcement programs — consistent, predictable and verifiable levels of compliance and quality. This means that one participating company can be sure that some part X will work with their own part Y. If you have ever experienced a compatibility failure, you’ll understand how truly marvelous standards compliance is.

Some standards are open, which means that they were determined and defined by an industry consensus. Other standards are closed and proprietary, which means they were created by a company, and then came to dominate the market because of the success of that company’s products.

Protocols

Protocols are rules governing communication between devices or applications, and the creation or manipulation of any logical or communicative artifacts concomitant with such communication.

The Internet and web are built on a slew of such protocols, including:

• hyper-text transfer protocol (HTTP)
• file transfer protocol (FTP)
• transmission control protocol / internet protocol (TCP/IP)
• secure sockets layer

Protocols like these provide the backbone instructions for moving information around teh Internet and web. Compliance with and support for common protocols is expected, but may not be specified in requirements documentation.
